Omro Area children take to the stage!

The Rebel Alliance Theatre Spring Children’s Workshop presents Super Potato.  A hilarious family comedy by Rebel’s resident playwright Marty Duhatschek.

Children’s performances:  April 14, 15, and 16 at 7pm.

Rebel Core Actor performances:  April 28, 29, and 30 at 7pm.

Where:  Rebel Alliance Theatre and Omro’s Center for the Arts 404 S. Webster St, Omro.

This spring twelve area children, aged 8 to 12, will have the opportunity to experience the magic of live theatre as participants in the Rebel Alliance Theatre Children’s Workshop.  The kids will work with experienced Rebel actors and staff to learn about memorizing lines, moving across the stage, listening and reacting to other actors, improvisation, and the technical aspects of live theatre.  Each child will be assigned an older mentor who will work with them as they learn their lines and develop their characters.

The Children’s Workshop will culminate in three performances of Super Potato, a show which has long been a favorite of Rebel Audiences.  Super Potato, by Marty Duhatschek, is the story of Jamie, a young girl obsessed with television, and her video game-playing babysittery Terri.  Through the intervention of Lloyd the Bovine, one of the famous Rebel Cows, Jamie and Teri are taken on a magical tour of the FTRC (Fairy Tale Recycling Center).  Here they encounter a series of familiar fairy tale characters, who help them to discover the wonderful world of imagination that waits for those who are willing to put down the game controller and turn off the TV.

Attend either weekend of Super Potato (or both) for a rollicking evening of family fun!

All performances of Super Potato will begin at 7pm (doors open at 6:30pm).  Tickets are $5 for children 12 and under.  Adult tickets are offered on a sliding scale for either $8 or $15.  Reservations are strongly encouraged as seating is limited.

What constitutes genius?  Which qualities cause a person to be characterized as “crazy”?  Is it possible for one person to be both brilliant and mad?  Are genius and insanity really different manifestations of the same condition?  And while we’re at it – what is the nature of realtiy anyway?

If your intellect has been feeling a bit sluggish and chilled by the long Wisconsin winter, then Rebel Alliance Theatre has the show to warm up your mental machinery!  “Proof”, a Pulitzer Prize winning play by David Auburn, tells the story of Catherine, the daughter of Robert, a recently deceased mathematical genius and professor at the University of Chicago.  It follows her attempt to prove her authorship of a groundbreaking mathematical proof discovered in her father’s office after his death, and her struggle to forge her own identity in the shadow of her father’s.

As the playwright tells Catherine’s story, he also challenges our understandings of the boundries between brilliance and insanity, appearance and reality, truth and illusion.   The play’s title refers not only to the proof of a mathematical theorem, but also Catherine’s struggle to prove her worthiness as a scholar, her importance to her family, her identity as a woman, and her value as a human being.

“Proof” will be presented Feb 17 – 19 and 24 – 26, 2011 at Rebel Alliance Theatre and Omro’s Center for the Arts (404 South Webster St in Omro).  All shows will begin at 7 pm (doors open at 6:30 pm).  Tickets are $8 or $15 and are offered on a sliding scale (visit our website for an explanation of the sliding ticket scale pricing).  Tickets may be purchased online by visiting www.rebelalliancetheatre.org and clicking the red link below the “Proof” poster.

Special Offer:  Attend “Proof” during Valentine’s Day Weekend and receive a Sweet Treat for your Sweet Heart!

Proof

January 24, 2011

Proof, by David Auburn, won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2001.

It follows Catherine, who is reeling from the death of her father Robert, mathematical genius and former professor at the University of Chicago.  After completing his best work and rocking the mathematical world in his early twenties Robert gradually descended into madness, only regaining lucidity for nine months in his final year and never working again.  Or did he?  Reluctantly Catherine allows Hal, Robert’s former student, to search for a method in the madness by reading through the 103 notebooks Robert filled with nonsensical work over his lifetime.  In the wake of the funeral Claire, Catherine’s older sister, presents her with some life-changing decisions to make after years of being the sole care-giver for their father.  Where will she live?  What will she do now?  Is she just like her father?

Then a proof is discovered.  “The proof of all proofs.”  And Catherine claims she wrote it.  The play follows her struggle to prove herself as its author, to trust and be trusted, and to forge her own identity in the shadow of her father’s genius and madness.

The first week of the Gathering Space Christmas Market, held the 3 days following Thanksgiving, was a great success.  Jenni Hopfinger, whose jewel bright painted glassware brightens any was present, along with her husband, Paul Dominguez.  Paul creates beautifully colored pencil drawings of birds, fish, and wildlife on wood.  Steve Miller’s graceful bowls, vases, and ornaments, which he turns on a lathe, represented another aspect of artistry in wood.  Carole Longworth’s gorgeous traditional hand hooked rugs, and Apple Orchard Alpaca’s unbelievably soft alpaca fiber scarves, mittens, socks, and yarn added warmth and comfort to the exhibit.  10 artists in all were represented the first weekend of The Christmas Market, and people came as far away as Milwaukee and Door County to see their wares.

If you missed visiting the Gathering Space Christmas Market the first weekend, all is not lost — there is one more Friday, Saturday, and Sunday left before the Market closes for the season.  The Market will be open 9am to 5pm Dec 3 – 5.  If you came to the show last weekend, there is still much more to see – an almost entirely new group of artists will be present the second weekend of the Market.  Apple Orchard Alpaca’s will be there again, as will Dave Ostwald with his photography.  Joining them will be Sheila Duffy with her beautiful ceramic and gourd creations, Sara Water’s Jewelry, Cindy Silvon’s Victorian Bath and Beauty items, and a host of other wonderful Christmas Gift ideas.

As a special treat the Sandvidge sisters, authors of Apple Betty and Sloppy Joe, will be there with their new book, Penny Loafers and Bobby Pins.  Meet the sisters and get an autographed copy of their new book!

Join us at the Gathering Space this Christmas and bask in the glow of the Old North Rushford Church, beautifully decorated for the Holidays.  Sample some Christmas treats, hear music of the season, and support local artists by shopping for one of a kind gift items lovingly handcrafted just for you.
